We the Latch staff would like to pay a loving tribute to Dr. Marilyn Maxwell,
coordinator and founder of the Latch Program, upon her retirement from Massasoit
Community College. Dr. Maxwell taught us all. that a kind word, a friendly
smile, and a note of encouragement could move mountains and change attitudes.
Her philosophy, shown through her actions not words, has not always been easy to
implement. She has always encouraged us to put students first and to always
make students feel important. Dr. Maxwell had the foresight twenty years ago to
build a safe place of learning, a place of hope. Marilyn often borrowed this
quote by Charles Sawyer, "Of all the forces that make for a better world, none
is so indispensable, none so powerful, as hope. Without hope we are only half
alive. With hope we dream and think, and work." Her philosophy has touched
hardened hearts and made them dance towards the sun. We thank you, Marilyn, for
your years of inspiration and quiet dedication. We, the Latch staff, have
committed ourselves to strive in the same spirit as you, Dr. Maxwell, to build a
safe place of learning, a place of hope.

Finally, the Latch staff in conjunction with Dr. Maxwell's husband and the
college will be establishing a scholarship fund in her name and in her honor.
