Attendance and participation in class, is a vital part of the college learning experience. Research has demonstrated the positive correlation between class attendance and academic success. This policy is an attempt to make very clear to the student what their responsibility is, regarding class attendance. The student should view class attendance as mandatory. However, there are situations that may cause a student to miss a class. For Example: a student may need to miss a class for reasons of illness, a death in the family or a court appearance. In order to accommodate these unforeseen occurrences, a student in a Monday-Wednesday-Friday class will be allowed 5 absences. A student in a Tuesday-Thursday class will be allowed 3 absences. Absences beyond this number will result in the student's grade being adjusted accordingly:
Please note: 9 absences (M-W-F) and 6 absences (T/TH) would mean that the student has missed a total of three weeks of class during a 15 week semester. Tardiness: Tardiness is unacceptable. A student who enters the room after class has started is a distraction to the class and the instruction that is taking place. A student arriving late should be seated as quickly and quietly as possible. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor at the end of class of their tardiness. Failure to do this will result in the student being marked absent. If the student arrives more than 10 minutes late the tardiness will count as an absence. Consistent tardiness will not be tolerated and will result in the following grade adjustments:
