COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed
to afford students an opportunity to increase the accuracy of comprehension and to further
develop general knowledge, vocabulary, study skills, and critical reading skills. An
additional one-hour lab in the Academic Resource Center may be a required part of the
course. NOTE: Credit earned in this course cannot be applied toward
graduation.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To improve the student's independent learning
skills
2. To improve the students critical
thinking, reading, writing,
listening and speaking
skills and to promote an understanding
of the
interrelationship among these skills
3. To increase the student's general fund of
knowledge
4. To improve the student's general and content
specific
vocabularies
CLASS POLICIES:
Instructor's Assumption: Learning to read well
demands commitment on your part. I assume that, as a college student, you are
prepared to work hard and responsibly.
Attendance: Attendance is required. After five
absences, your grade will be reduced. Three late arrivals and/or early departures
constitute an absence. If you miss all or a portion of a class, you are to arrange
immediately with a classmate to review the material covered during your absence.
Also, you are to arrange with me to make up all in- and out-of-class written
assignments. In fairness to those students present, quizzes missed due to absences
or tardiness may not be made up.
Teaching Procedures: The class will be taught through
lecture, small group work, individual conferences, and in- and out-of-class
assignments. As time permits, relevant audiovisual materials will be used in
class.
Bring your texts, dictionary, paper, and pen to class each
day. I intend to make the class as useful and enjoyable as possible: I expect you to
do the same.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is presenting the work of
others as if it is your own. It is a form of cheating and of theft and will result
in failure.
Please Note: I have the right to terminate a student's
participation in my class or course if his/her behavior disrupts the learning process.
Due Dates: Work is due as assigned. Late
writing assignments, as a general rule, are not acceptable. They will be discounted
one letter grade for each late day. In no case may work be submitted for evaluation
more than one week after the due date. Late homework is never accepted.
Class: Bring your text, dictionary, paper, and pen
to class each day. I intend to make the class as useful and enjoyable as possible,
and I expect you to do the same. The class will
be taught through lecture, discussion, group work, and
exercises.
GRADING: Your final grade will be an average of all
exams and long written assignments, your quiz and homework average, and your class
participation (class participation, attendance, tutorials).
SCHEDULE
This schedule indicates approximately when we will be
involved in which tasks. The specific due dates for assignments and quizzes
will be announced in class.
