GENETIC DISEASE PAPER
Every year we find more links between genetics and human diseases. The
Human Genome Project is mapping the nucleotide sequences of each of
the human chromosomes. Two thirds of all the DNA has been sequenced
and all of one chromosome (#22) Examine the Human Genome Map (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genemap98/)
and find an identified (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/disease/)
inherited disease (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genemap98/page.cgi?F=Applications.html)that
interests you (it can be a disease that someone you know has. Write a two
page report (double space, 12pt) on what is known about this disease and
if has affected you or some one you know. The paper should give the name
of the disease & a short description of symptoms. Using the NCBI site
locate the chromosome or chromosomes the disease is linked to. If known,
note the type of inheritance involved. Follow the link to Medline, or use
another internet source to find a current journal article on the disease
(you may use more than one article if you wish, but only one is required).
You are looking for a scientific journal not something from the popular
press. You will find the most recent articles are listed first. The rest
of the paper should be a summary of the article you have chosen. Attach
a copy of the article to your paper.
